Exercises in co-ordinating actions of airport and external services

After an alert was sounded on 4 December 2004 at 00:18 hrs, exercises in co-ordinating the actions of airport and external services started at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport.

The subject of the exercises was: response to a critical situation related to an aircraft hijacking by terrorists, and holding the passengers hostage at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport.

The following took part in the exercises:

  • Officers of the:
    Airport Police Station in Gdańsk,
    Province Police Headquarters in Gdańsk,
    Municipal Police Headquarters in Gdańsk,
    Police Prevention Department in Gdańsk,
    Independent Anti-terrorist Police Squad in Gdańsk;
  • Officers of the Border Guard Control in Gdańsk - Rębiechowo;
  • Officers of the Municipal Headquarters of the National Fire Fighting Brigade in Gdańsk;
  • Personnel of the Municipal Ambulance Service in Gdańsk;
  • Personnel of the Municipal Ambulance Service in Sopot;
  • Personnel of the Municipal Ambulance Service in Gdynia;
  • Personnel of the County Ambulance Service in Pruszcz Gdański;
  • Personnel of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of Gdańsk;
  • Airport Fire Fighting Unit personnel;
  • Airport Security personnel;
  • Personnel of the Polish Air Traffic Agency;
  • Personnel of LOT - Usługi Lotniskowe w Gdańsku Sp. z o.o..

Personnel of other airport services in accordance with their tasks as described in the “Airport Protection Programme" and “Operational Plan for Airport Rescue."

It fell to the students of the School of Emergency Medicine in Gdynia to act the various roles.

Altogether, 288 people participated in the exercises.

The initial assessment of the exercises indicated proper co-operation between participating entities, and their adequate preparedness for solving critical situations.
