The Cup and the title remain in Gdansk. After a fierce fight the soccer team of our Airport managed to win the title of the Polish Airports Indoor Soccer Champion for the second time in succession.
11 teams with the total of 115 players representing almost all airports in Poland participated in the Championship which was held on Saturday, 14 September in the Physical Education and Sports Academy in Gdansk. Knockout matches were held in four groups, with one of the four-best teams of the last Championship (Gdansk, Warszawa, Wrocław and Katowice) in each of them. The teams taking the first and the second place in each group played in the Cup system to win places from one to eight, while the remaining ones competed for places from nine to eleven.
This year the team of Gdansk-Trójmiasto Airport was weakened. As a result of injuries, two top players (Sławomir Olszewski and Sławomir Kurowski) did not participate in the matches. In the knockout matches the Gdansk team easily bet the team of the Rzeszów airport, winning 7:0. The second match with the Poznan team turned out to be much more difficult. After a fierce fight, Gdansk players lost 1:2, but owing to their high score in the match with the Rzeszów team, they were qualified for further matches as the group winner. Our team played the first semi-final match with the representatives of the Wrocław airport. It was finished with a 2:0 victory of the Gdansk players. The semi-final match with Szczecin resulted in a 0:0 tie and penalty kicks had to be ordered. Owing to the good play of the Gdansk goalkeeper, Radosław Podhorecki, who managed to defend two penalty kicks, the team was qualified to the finals. In the final match Gdansk played with Katowice, winning 1:0 in a fight for the first place, and thus defending last year’s title of the Polish Champion. The match for the 3rd place was finished with a victory of the Szczecin airport representation playing with the Poznań Airport team (1:0).
Players from our team won two out of three individual awards. Referees announced Radosław Podhorecki the best goalkeeper of the Championship and Sebastian Letniowski, who scored 6 goals in total, was granted the title of the best shooter. Roman Urbańczyk from the Katowice Airport team was elected the best player. The players were cheered by the numerous fans, who came to Gdansk with their teams from all over Poland.
