Construction is due to commence on a meteorological radar dish for the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management on the airport grounds in Rêbiechowo. The complete radar construction and commissioning will be performed by RADWAR Professional Electronic Devices Completion and Supply Company from Warsaw, while ELBUD Gdañsk S.A.
Power Engineering Company will be the building contractor. The Meteor 1500 C Doppler radar dish will form a part of the POLRAD Meteorological Radar System. The station will be used for the observation of atmospheric phenomena and the transfer of the related data to the System Operations Centre in Warsaw, as well as for making weather information available to other users. The radar tower will be 22.5 metres high, (28.75 metres high including the radar-covering dome).
The tower will be encased in an octagon-based structure widening at the top, where the radar room will be situated. The encasement of the tower core will be made from a trapezoidal sheet, and the radar room will be made of laminated boards. The meteorological radar will be covered with a white dome, 6.7 metres in diameter.
On the top of the dome, red obstruction lights will be installed. Remote-controlled and operated by the Meteo Office in Gdynia, the radar will help forecasters and hydrologists prepare everyday weather forecasts and warnings. The meteorological radar is meant to identify precipitation volume and location, as well as the direction and velocity of precipitation, storms and gales.
The radar is expected to mitigate the effects of and prevent material losses due to extreme weather conditions within the national POLRAD Meteorological Radar System. Information obtained from the analysis of radar images will be supplied to local services for crisis prevention, such as flood prevention services.
