We have pleasure in informing you that in March 2008, 159,385 passengers travelled to and from Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, with a total number of 431,205 passengers passing through the airport since the beginning of the year. The quarterly number of passengers handled by the airport grew by 36.9% in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2007, and by as much as 111.0%, (which is more than two times) in comparison with the 1st quarter of 2006 (2006 was a record year in respect of the pace of growth i
This fast pace of growth is primarily attributable to the development of low-cost airlines in the Gdańsk airport. During the 1st quarter of the year, this segment recorded an increase by 53.5%. During the discussed period, new connections became available, including flights to Oslo, Bournemouth, Coventry, and Goteborg (Wizz Air).
However, it is not only budget flights that account for the growth in the number of passengers handled by Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport. During the first three months of 2008, conventional airlines also recorded an increase in the number of passengers by 13.6%, and extended their offers with a few new destinations, including Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Oslo (SAS), and Helsinki (Finnair – a reactivated route).
Carriers offering non-scheduled flights to and from Gdańsk have continued to develop, too. At the beginning of the year, the number of their passengers rose by 23.1%, which was mostly due to the growing number of tourist charter flights from Gdańsk to warm countries.
With the promised new flights to Cardiff, the East Midlands (BMI baby), Turku, Barcelona (Wizz Air), Barcelona (Centralwings), and Birmingham (Ryanair), 2008 is likely to be another record year in respect of the number of passengers travelling though Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport.
