Preliminary data indicate that in April 2011 Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport handled 193.4 thousand passengers, thus exceeding the results from April 2010 by as much as 38%. Over the first four months of 2011, a total of 651.8 thousand passengers had been handled, which is 10.4% more than in the same period last year.
“Considering the paralysis of European airports caused by the volcano eruption in April 2010, everybody knew that the increase in the same period this year was basically bound to happen. Such a leap in the dynamics, however, is a very nice surprise to us. In none of past Aprils have we reached such a high number of passengers handled. We owe the record passenger figures mainly to the new and extended flight schedule”, said Adam Skonieczny, Head of the Marketing and Economic Analyses Department at Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport.
The excellent results in terms of passenger traffic at Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport are the consequence of the introduction of a summer flight schedule, featuring such new connections as Helsinki (Finnair together with Finncomm), Stavanger, Goteborg, Arhus, Tampere (Wizz Air) and Riga (Air Baltic), as well as the renewal of summer connections to Barcelona (Wizz Air) and Alicante (Ryanair) and the increase in the frequency of flights to Munich (Lufthansa).
“We are convinced that the months to come will be marked by more records. We hope that a carrier offering excellent domestic connections will soon enter Gdansk. In addition, Air Baltic informed of the strengthening of its position in Gdansk by increasing the frequency of connections with Riga from 4 to 6 times a week”, added Adam Skonieczny.
At present, with its 42 airline connections, Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport can pride itself on one of the most extensive networks of regular direct connections.
