During the three months of 2021, there were 105,095 travelers at Gdansk Airport (88.2% drop compared to the first quarter of 2020) and 3.314 air operations (64.4% drop). The amount of the handled goods and mail increased by over 16%.
“The results for the first quarter of 2021 are not the best, but that was to be expected with the observed traffic levels. We only check in 10% of the passengers who would have been checked had it not been for COVID. We are still waiting for the resumption of the air traffic. I hope that vaccines will be the panacea for unblocking the whole Europe including Poland. There are the first positive signals indicating that the holiday period might be better this year. If we can travel without restrictions in the summer, we will be heading to overcome the crisis. From that moment things will only be better” - said Tomasz Kloskowski, the President of Lech Walesa Gdansk Airport. In the first quarter of 2021, Gdansk Airport achieved an increase in cargo operations. It cleared 2,097 tons of commodities, which is 16.2% more than in the same period last year. Cargo accounts for 1.5% of Gdansk Airport’s revenues.
The airport recorded a loss of PLN 12 221 000.00 for three months of this year. This is directly related to the reduction in the number of flight operations and passengers handled. “We were counting on the pandemic situation to improve and we will generate profits this year. After three months, we have losses. If this situation continues, we will have to borrow more money from the bank” - admitted Tomasz Kloskowski.
The financial condition has no direct impact on the investments made in the Port. The construction of the Alpha office building as a part of Airport City Gdansk is close to completion. At the same time, at the extension of the passenger terminal, the last external works are in progress, and then the finishing works will be carried out.
The Airport provides in the network 82 connections from Gdansk to 21 countries (including Poland) to 69 airports, operated by 10 carriers for this summer season. The airlines announce the launch of new flights every few days. President Tomasz Kloskowski admits that the Airport conducts vivid and interesting negotiations with carriers about new destinations.
