Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport

Renewed Certificates

During a ceremony held on 4 January this year at the headquarters of the Board of Civil Aviation, certificates were awarded to the operators of Warsaw F. Chopin Airport, Gdańsk L. Wałęsa Airport, Katowice International Airport in Pyrzowice and Szczecin-Goleniów Airport. The validity of the certificates held by the said airports was extended by three years.

The requirement for public utility airports to obtain certificates was introduced by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Aviation Law Act of 3 July 2002.

The primary purpose of airport certification is to ensure that the Airport Operator is capable of managing the airport in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner. This is an important factor in encouraging air carriers to run their air operations from such an airport.

The process of airport certification requires thorough preparations on the part of both the Operator and the inspectors. In order to meet the requirements, both the inspectors and the airport representatives underwent training devoted to airport certification, which was conducted by experts from the Canadian ATDI - Aviation Training and Development Institute - an ICAO-recommended training centre.
