Around 1.5 million passengers, almost 5 thousand tons of air shipments and over 20 thousand take-offs and landings in Gdansk in 2020.
During the three quarters of 2020, Lech Walesa Gdansk Airport served 1 472 945 travelers. This is much less than in the comparable period last year but after more than three months of non-operation and stoppage of scheduled flights, the situation is already under recovery.
“Recently, we have had over 150 thousand passengers in Gdansk monthly. In July, there were 154 thousand of them, in August over 233 thousand and in September almost 178 thousand. It means that we are slowly returning to flying. This year, at the Gdansk Airport, we have a chance to serve about two million passengers, last year we had more than five million passengers and this decrease is a direct consequence of the coronavirus for our company” - says Tomasz Klosowski, the President of Lech Walesa Gdansk Airport.
The Gdansk Airport served 2 million travelers in 2013 for the first time. However, the Airport does not intend to make up for the coronavirus losses in the next 7 years. “We will do it in three years. People want to travel, hang out with friends, visit other countries, they want to fly to work and have the freedom to travel. Currently, some of them are afraid of the restrictions introduced by individual countries, for instance flight bans, quarantine or compulsory tests for coronavirus. In times of uncertainty, passengers refrain from flying and aviation needs peace to rebuild air traffic. So we are waiting for the situation to stabilize. We can see that the Schengen states are beginning to agree on what traveling should look like and there are no more flight bans in Europe. We are waiting for further arrangements. Flying should become freed, just like cars, trains, and ferries. And for each means of transportation, in Europe and in the Schengen area, the same sanitary and medical rules should apply” - believes Tomasz Klosowski
Flight destinations
The most popular destinations for regular flights from Gdansk are still London and Oslo, followed by Warsaw and Copenhagen. Slowly but surely, charter traffic is recovering. After a break caused by the ban on flights, Poles started to fly on vacation, in July there were almost 6 thousand of them in Gdansk, in August almost 13 thousand and in September over 13.5 thousand. The most popular destinations are invariably Greece, Turkey and Egypt.
Air operations
From January until the end of September, a total of 20 256 take-off and landing operations took place at Gdansk Airport. This is over 45% less than in the comparable period in 2019. However, after the collapse in April 2020, when there were only 522 of those operations, their number is gradually increasing.
Cargo
So far, Gdansk Airport has recorded the lowest losses in handling cargo shipments. During the three quarters of 2020, there were 4 861 792 kilograms of packages and letters. In September, however, there was an increase of over 12% as compared to the same month of 2019 and the Airport handled 621 310 kilograms of goods.
Financial results
Gdansk Airport has a loss of PLN 3 million 456 thousand zloty for three quarters of 2020. “The financial situation of Gdansk Airport is stable. We planned to have profits in 2020, unfortunately, there will be losses, but probably not more than PLN 5-10 million. We intend to finance the losses with a loan. We are also waiting for the government aid” - reassures the President of Gdansk Airport.
