Gdańsk-Trójmiasto Airport has launched the implementation of an investment programme to improve aircraft and passenger security and to bring the passenger terminal in line with the standards stipulated in the Schengen Treaty.
Thanks to a subsidy from the Ministry of Infrastructure for the year 2003 as well as to the airport’s own funds earmarked for investments, two stands will be created on the airport premises for customs checks of passenger baggage. One stand will service EU nationals, the other - passengers holding passports from outside the European Union.
The construction of the new stands will entail the purchase of conveyor belts for the customs check points as well as an x-ray scanning system for baggage checks of non-EU passengers. Additional equipment to be installed includes a metal detector gate and an ITV system. A special lounge will also be prepared in the terminal for passengers who are refused entry at the airport and are awaiting a return flight.
Many items of equipment will be purchased this year to increase passenger and aircraft security standards even further. The airport will acquire a fixed radiation detector for cargo checks and a portable narcotic drugs detector. The equipment will also include a new water gun, protective clothing for the bomb disposal expert and a special anti-bomb blanket to mitigate the effects of explosions.
The subsidy from the Ministry of Infrastructure, for PLN 1.4 million, which was granted to Gdańsk-Trójmiasto Airport enabled the commencement of the public procurement procedures regarding equipment supplies and building services.
