The representatives of the Gdansk Airport and the Port of Gdansk Authority have signed a letter of intent regarding their cooperation in supporting the construction and effective use of the maritime Central Port in Gdansk.
The idea of establishing cooperation arose along with the concept of building a maritime Central Port, which, in its assumptions, includes, among others, creating a new space for a cruise ship base. The Gdansk Airport offers convenient flight connections enabling the exchange of crews and passengers. Both parties hope that creating the bases for cruise passenger ships in Gdansk, in particular the largest vessels, will contribute to increasing their number and thus to increasing the efficiency in using this part of the Central Port, as well as to the region development by increasing the number of tourists visiting Pomerania. More tourists means more passengers at the Gdansk Airport. The letter of intent was signed by Tomasz Kloskowski, the President of the Gdansk Airport, Łukasz Greinke, the President of the Port of Gdansk and Sławomir Michalewski, the Vice President of Finance for the Port of Gdansk.
"Establishing cooperation between the seaport and the airport in Gdansk is an extremely important element of the Central Port implementation. The project involves, but is not limited to, the construction of a new cruise terminal. The new pier will allow the largest cruise ships in the world to call at Gdansk. Currently, due to the lack of proper infrastructure, the port cannot accept such large units", said Łukasz Greinke, the President of the Port of Gdansk Authority. "The agreement with the Gdansk Airport is our signal to potential investors that the Port of Gdansk has gained another strong partner in this important undertaking", added Łukasz Greinke. "We strongly expect that the development of the maritime Central Port will contribute to the development of the entire region. We hope for economic recovery, but also for an increased number of tourists who will decide to come to our country on board of cruise ships. These tourists, as well as ship crews, are the potential customers of our airport who will use it when planning their travels, "said Tomasz Kloskowski, the President of the Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport.
The maritime Central Port is the flagship investment in the Port of Gdansk and the largest planned maritime investment in Europe. The Central Port will cover about 1,400 ha of water and 410 ha of land area. The project envisages the creation of 9 terminals. The first terminals are to be ready in 2029. The construction of the Central Port is expected to cost about PLN 12 billion, including the expenses of the maritime administration for the construction of new breakwaters and other infrastructure.
