West Pier
Investment status:
CompletedThe western pier is designed as a 2.5-storey building, partly with basement, with a ground plan dimension of 180 × 46 metres. The north-west corner of the hall has been overhung above the airport bus manoeuvring area with access to two staircases, the so-called bus gates leading directly to the first floor level, between which a clean air intake unit for the ventilation system is located. On the southern side of the pier, from the side of the existing aircraft parking apron PPS 3, four external staircases (there are ten staircases in total) were constructed to allow access to the passenger sleeves serving the aircraft parked in contact positions.
On the ground floor of the pier, an enlarged baggage reclaim hall was erected, which can ultimately accommodate nine baggage conveyor belts, an extended arrival baggage area, a passport control area with the installation of six document control points for passengers arriving from non-Schengen and third countries, and a communication area to the Schengen, non-Schengen and third-country gates, along with associated areas: service staff, airport service, technical and sanitary rooms. On the north side of the pier, a bus ramp was built towards the two bus-gates, allowing direct access from the apron to the first floor level. On the mezzanine level, an extension of the transit corridor was introduced, analogous to the existing part of the terminal. On the first-floor level, a departure hall with three double non-Schengen and one Schengen cage gates was constructed. Complexes of rooms for the Border Guard, Customs and the airport staff, sanitary facilities and passenger areas were constructed. The spatial layout of the hall with its traffic routes and cubicles of usable areas is an extension of the existing T2 Terminal hall.
The distinctive form of the multi-plane roofing and steel structure, which is a unique value and recognizable sign of Gdansk Airport, is the main reference point for the form of the new western pier. The pier's roof is a typical shed roof arrangement, together with skylights to provide adequate sunlight to the first floor departure hall. It is founded on five-armed columns of a form analogous to the existing terminal. The increased spacing of the structural columns has allowed for more flexible internal space.
The western pier serves three groups of passengers:
- passengers from Schengen countries,
- non-Schengen passengers,
- third-country passengers with increased control requirements.
Depending on the volume of air traffic, the two bus-gates can be included in the Schengen or non-Schengen zone. Splitting or merging with the Schengen zone is possible thanks to a mobile glass wall at the border of the zones.
