At Gdansk Airport, on the construction site of the western pier, the installation of huge steel girders is under way, which will form the structure of the building roof. The terminal’s extension is designed to improve the coziness of our passengers’ service.
The construction of the western building, which will be an extension of the existing passenger terminal, has been in operation since the fall of last year and is due to be completed in the 4th quarter of 2021. It is carried out by the DORACO Construction Corporation.
The first components of the steel installation which will serve as the roof structure and a “grate” for the aluminum-glass façade of the pier building are already on the construction site. DORACO are fitting special elements called girders. Each of the 4 girders consists of 5 pieces 36 meters in length and 12 tons in weight. Together they will form a 180-meter long and a 44-meter wide structure. It will weigh 600 tons in total. Structures such as girders are used on construction sites to cover large-area objects such as stadiums and sport and event halls and for building bridges and viaducts in the road industry.
98% of the construction work of the reinforced concrete structure has been completed so far at the construction of the pier at Gdansk Airport. Work is ongoing on the construction of external staircases for passenger sleeves. DORACO are planning to complete the steel structure and the external staircases and to start the assembly of the aluminum-glass façade and the works related to roof covering within the next two months.
After the extension of the passenger terminal, Gdansk Airport will gain almost 16 000 sqm of new space (to date it is approx. 45 000 sqm). The new pier will serve scheduled passengers travelling to non-Schengen countries, and a part of the new pier will also serve Schengen passengers.
Basic parameters changes after the pier is completed:
- central safety inspection point - increase of the control line from 11 to 18
- passport check-in/departures points - increase of the passages from 6 to 10
- passport check-in/arrivals points - increase of the passages from 8 to 12
- departure gates - increase of the number of gates from 20 to 30
- baggage claim - increase the number of carousels from 5 to 9
